Wairarapa Campaign Launch

Patrick Leyland | | 4:02 am

Wairarapa Labour Candidate Denise MacKenzie will launch her campaign for the 2008 general election this Sunday afternoon (October 5th) at a Family Fun function to be held on the Village Green next to Kids Own Playground in Masterton at 2 pm.

“I wanted to have a family fun event as my launch to show how much families mean to me and to the Labour Party” said Mrs MacKenzie.

As it is the middle of the school holidays families may be looking to spend time together.

We are planning to have some music and egg and spoon, sack, three legged and wheelbarrow races. Other activities will be face-painting and story-telling. Children are also invited to bring along their bikes, scooters or other non-motorized wheels for a “Best Decorated Wheels Competition.

We will have a sausage sizzle and be selling homemade lemonade.

“The emphasis is on low cost and good old-fashioned family fun. A bit like the picnic days we used to have in my day,” says Mrs MacKenzie.

“Our hosts and judges for the afternoon will be ex Wairarapa MP Georgina Beyer and current Labour List MP Charles Chauvel.”

“So come along and enjoy just having fun – all families are welcome.”

Labour ex-pat comes home to contest Waikato

Patrick Leyland | | 9:17 pm

Labour candidate Jacinda Ardern is returning home from three years overseas to contest the Waikato seat for Labour in this election, it was announced at the Party's regional launch at Frankton Market today.

Ms Ardern, who is 28 and a new entrant at number twenty on Labour's list, was born in Hamilton, and grew up in Morrinsville, attending Morrinsville college and Waikato University.

Ms Ardern said she was excited to be running in her old home town. "The Waikato is one of the places I will always consider home. I feel extremely privileged to be contesting it on behalf of Labour.

"Despite my time abroad I've never lost my passion for the Waikato. Over the last decade it's surpassed other regions in terms of growth and development and I’m excited to return to campaign there.”

Currently based in London, Ms Ardern has been campaigning for the party's expat vote since April.  While in the United Kingdom she has worked for the Department for Business and Enterprise and on a Review of Policing in England and Wales.  She was previously an Advisor in the Prime Ministers Office, Rt Hon Helen Clark.

"My time abroad has reinforced for me what a great country New Zealand is and just how much progress we have made over the past decade.  I look forward to being a part of the Labour team that fights to ensure we can continue to make New Zealand a place kiwis are proud to call home."
